Eco friendly, a term that is now becoming more widely used, but what does it mean, and where does it end?

Eco-friendly literally means earth-friendly or not harmful to the environment. This term most commonly refers to products that contribute to green living or practices that help conserve resources like water and energy. Eco-friendly products have been designed to do the least possible damage to the environment.

We can always aim to do a bit better, bit by bit. It doesn’t have to be a drastic life change to use less, or change a few old habits, whether thats using less single use plastics (where there is no alternative) or to more recycling of the materials we do use, and reusing them where we can. One thing is definite, the problem of litter in general, in particular, litter entering the ocean such as plastic, has never been highlighted as much as it has through mainstream media channels in the same way it has through the past couple of years. Especially throughout 2017, through Blue planet 2.

I have a pet dog though, why should i care about plastic or the ocean?

We care. We care about your pets health. We also care about the environment, and other species on the planet. “Every year, around 8 million metric tons of plastic waste enters the ocean, where it can prove fatal to marine life.” according to BBC One – Get involved with Ocean Conservation. The BBC One website also lists information on Microplastics and why they are so dangerous. Microplastics have now been found in drinking water. Yes – really! Plastic is extremely harmful to wildlife in many ways, they may attempt to digest it, get stuck in it and more.

Over  5.25 trillion pieces of plastic are already in the world’s ocean. That number is predicted to double by 2025, by 2050 it will be three per minute and the number of plastic pieces in our seas will outnumber fish. Over 480 billion plastic drinking bottles were used globally in 2016, the equivalent of 20,000 per second, enough to reach half way to the sun. Only a small percentage were recycled. More than five trillion plastic bags are used and discarded annually. The United States uses 500 million plastic straws every day. So, it’s a global problem, not one person or anywhere is to blame, if things don’t change, there will be an ocean of plastic with no fish.

Why should you buy Eco-friendly dog products?

Land of Dogs are passionate about supplying more Eco-Friendly products to your pets, for many reasons.

There are many alternatives to the producuts that are conventionally made of plastics, and they’re much better for the environment such as being biodegradeable, compostable, recycleable. Some of the products we stock do contain RECYCLED plastic bottles, PET bottles and aluminium containers – so make sure you recycle them after use. Even a small change by doing more recycling helps. Land of Dogs keep continuing to minimise any use of plastics and look for alternatives such as our compostable dog food bags!

Consumers have a choice, and that comes down to the products that are bought on a daily basis, monthly basis, yearly basis, and a learning curve of what each and everyone of us can do to help. According to the PDSA24% of the UK adult population have a dog with an estimated population of 8.9 million pet dogs.” Many items for dogs being made of plastic, which is often left unrecycled, or eventually turning into microplastics (Did you know, even fabrics made with plastic like materials, shed microplastics everytime they are washed into the water?).

Recycling, isn’t always enough, but it is a start.

– REFUSE, REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE in that order. –

Think about your purchases!

– If you need to purchase something, ask yourself, how often do you need to buy that? Is there en eco-friendlier version available?
For example, when looking for a collar for your pup, you could buy one of our Eco-Friendly Hemp collars where the materials are Eco-friendly and also the metals are recycleable.

– if you do buy something that can be reused, then reuse it! Or if you can upcycle it, turn it into something new if you can!

– If you can, RECYCLE it so it doesn’t just end up the likes of the ocean or landfill. Always try to buy materials that are recycleable, compostable or biodegradeable where possible.
